Blockchain-Based Platform Readies Funding for National Film Industry
Funding remains one of the primary challenges facing the Indonesian film industry. High production and distribution costs, alongside limited access to financing, frequently hinder the creation of new works. Amidst rapid digital technological advancements, various innovations are emerging to reduce these barriers, including digital funding schemes.
Show Token, a platform based on blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI), was officially launched in Indonesia on Friday (23/05). The platform focuses on building a funding and distribution ecosystem for entertainment content, particularly the film industry, with a massive funding commitment of USD 100 million for the entertainment industry in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia.
“We view Indonesia not merely as a consumer market, but as an epicentre of talent that has long lacked liquidity and efficient distribution systems. We are here to resolve that inefficiency,” said the COO of Show Token, Joshua Khubani, in a press statement.
Technically, this digital asset operates on the Ethereum network (ERC-20). Token holders (project backers) will enjoy real-world utility, ranging from Decentralised Executive Producing (the right to support film funding) to Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Access.
In June 2024, the funding platform made its debut by financing the horror film ‘Cerita Lila’, which successfully attracted 500,000 viewers in its first week of release, and is set to continue with the film ‘Sihir Tanah Kubur’ this coming July.
This initial step will continue with a production funding target for more than 30 horror and drama film titles throughout this year. This ambitious project is being carried out through close collaboration with several production houses. Some of the films ready for support include ‘Seporsi Mie Ayam Sebelum Mati’, ‘Taboo’, ‘Siti Vampire’, and ‘Sebelum Tiga Puluh’.
“Indonesia possesses an extraordinary wealth of narratives, yet our progress is often halted at the domestic market due to limited global infrastructure. We want to build a digital ecosystem that allows the works of our nation’s people to be accessed and appreciated more widely,” said the CEO of Show Token, Akshay Melwani.
Through its official launch in Indonesia, Akshay hopes the presence of this platform can encourage collaboration between film industry players, the technology community, and various stakeholders in utilising blockchain and AI technology to support the development of the national film industry.
