JAKARTA — PT Global Digital Niaga Tbk (BELI), or Blibli, utilised the momentum of Earth Day 2026 to affirm that sustainability is not merely an annual agenda but an integral part of its daily operations. Through the Gadget for Good programme, the company promotes the management of electronic waste, or e-waste, as a daily habit. Amid growing public attention to environmental issues, the management of post-consumer materials remains a major challenge, particularly for electronic waste, whose volume continues to increase. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), only 22.3 per cent is formally recycled. In Indonesia, this challenge is also considered serious. Data indicates that Indonesia produces around 2 million tonnes of electronic waste per year, making it one of the largest contributors in Southeast Asia. Java Island is said to contribute more than half of that total volume. In DKI Jakarta, out of the total e-waste generated, only around 165 tonnes were successfully managed throughout the period from 2019 to May 2024, according to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. In response to this issue, Blibli implements the E-Waste Collection Programme through Gadget for Good by providing drop-off boxes for electronic waste collection that are accessible year-round at five Blibli Stores, namely Central Park, Gandaria City, Bintaro Jaya Xchange Mall, Lippo Mall Puri, and AEON Mall Sentul. Public participation in the programme is said to show an increasing trend. The average volume of e-waste collected rose 54 per cent, from 1.5 items per day in December 2025 to 2.4 items per day in the first quarter of 2026. According to the company, this trend reflects increasing public awareness in managing post-use devices more responsibly. Blibli’s Head of ESG, Ignacia Chiara Irawan, stated that sustainability has become part of the company’s everyday operations. “Sustainability is part of the way we operate every day, not just a programme that is ‘switched on’ during Earth Day and then ‘dimmed’ afterwards. We continue to provide opportunities in every transaction channel, both online and offline, to encourage broader positive impacts on the environment,” said Chiara in a press release on Wednesday (22/4/2026).
