Blackout not planned

CORRECTION: Our headline story yesterday misquoted the
minister of mines and energy, Ida Bagus Sudjana, as saying that
Sunday's blackout was planned. What was planned for Sunday was
repair work on transmission line I at the Gandul transmission and
load-control station.

While repair work was underway transmission line II overloaded
because the three electronic cards that provide load protection
were unexpectedly out of order. This caused the Suralaya power
station to trip, cutting off power to most areas in Java and
Bali. We apologize for the inconvenience the error caused.
