Black Smoke Erupts at Gondolayu Bridge in Jogja, Turns Out...

An incident shocked residents near Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Jetis, in Yogyakarta City, specifically in the Gondolayu Bridge area. Thick black smoke billowed from the bridge area and went viral on social media. In videos uploaded by the Instagram account @merapi_uncover, the black smoke can be seen rising high, visible from quite a distance. The post featured three videos from netizens taken from different angles. However, all videos showed dense black smoke billowing into the air. “Suddenly there’s black smoke billowing in the air, in the Sudirman road area near the monument. Not yet known what caused it,” read the caption in one of the videos uploaded by @merapi_uncover, as seen by detikJogja on Friday (10/4/2026). When contacted for confirmation regarding the incident, the Head of the Yogyakarta City Fire and Rescue Department (Damkarmat), Taokhid, revealed the true facts. He stated that the smoke came from rubbish burning activities under the bridge. “Type of incident: rubbish fire, at 13.43 WIB, at Gondolayu Bridge, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman No 25, Cokrodiningratan, Jetis, Yogyakarta City,” Taokhid explained in his report on Friday (10/4). Taokhid continued that the fire source was successfully extinguished after the Yogyakarta City Damkarmat deployed 10 personnel, assisted by 3 Redkar personnel. “Chronology: witnesses saw smoke billowing from under the bridge, then the witnesses reported it to the Jetis Police Sector and it was forwarded to the Yogyakarta City Damkarmat for extinguishing,” he concluded.
