BKSDA Maluku relocates 24 wildlife animals from seized shipment in Ternate
Ambon — The Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Maluku has translocated 24 wild animals seized by the Regional KSDA Section I office in Ternate, North Maluku, to conservation areas in Manokwari, West Papua.
“The translocation was carried out to return these animals to their natural habitat after being secured by officers,” said Forest Ecosystem Controller (PEH) at BKSDA Maluku Jingga Dwi Harpah Prasasti Ali in Ambon on Tuesday.
The animals being relocated comprise nine nemena tree kangaroos, one white cuscus, one spotted cuscus, one brown cuscus, two Papua oil lizards, seven green tree pythons, one black Albert’s python, and two gold Albert’s pythons.
All animals were dispatched from the Regional KSDA Section I office in Ternate to the Regional KSDA Section II office in Manokwari under the West Papua West Southwest BBKSDA using sea transport vessel KM Sinabung.
“Based on medical team examination results, all animals were in good health when dispatched to their destination,” Ali stated.
The translocation initiative was made possible through support from several non-governmental conservation organisations, including JAAN-JSI, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and the Centre of Orangutan Protection (COP), which assisted in the rescue and rehabilitation process of the wild animals.
This animal translocation forms part of efforts to enforce law and protect endangered wildlife from illegal trade practices that continue to occur in various regions.
Through this activity, BKSDA and its conservation partners hope that these animals can readapt to their natural habitats, ensuring the preservation of Papua’s endemic wildlife populations.
