BKSAP Stresses Implementation of AIPA Resolutions for the Benefit of ASEAN Communities
Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Body (BKSAP), Syahrul Aidi Maazat, has stressed that the implementation of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) resolutions must provide tangible benefits for communities in the region.
Closing the 17th AIPA Caucus in Jakarta on Wednesday, Syahrul stated that the caucus serves as a bridge between the political commitments agreed upon at the AIPA General Assembly and their implementation in each member state.
According to a report from the AIPA Secretariat, 52 percent of resolutions have been fully implemented, 22 percent have been partially implemented, while approximately 18 percent have yet to be implemented.
Syahrul said these achievements must serve as evaluation material so that every agreed resolution truly impacts the more than 700 million people of ASEAN. He asserted that the implementation of resolutions must be realised through the functions of legislation, budgeting, and oversight so that they do not remain merely political documents.
Syahrul added that ASEAN is currently facing various challenges, ranging from global economic uncertainty and trade fragmentation to financial market volatility, necessitating the strengthening of regional centrality and resilience.
According to him, parliament has a strategic role through its legislative, budgeting, oversight, and diplomacy functions to ensure regional commitments are translated into national policies that favour the people.
The 17th AIPA Caucus, hosted by Indonesia, carried the theme ‘The Role of Parliament in Strengthening ASEAN Centrality in Navigating Complex Global Challenges’ and produced a number of recommendations to strengthen the implementation of resolutions in member countries.
