Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Thomas Lembong, affirmed that Indonesia remains an attractive investment destination for European companies. He noted that the European Union is currently the fourth-largest investor in Indonesia.

“We welcome European companies’ investment in Indonesia, which also supports the national industry. European investors typically bring cutting-edge technology that can also be applied by local industries, in line with the government’s focus on making Indonesia an Industry 4.0 nation,” he said at the Indonesia Economic and Investment Outlook 2019 event in Jakarta on Wednesday (6 February).

At the same occasion, Vice Chairwoman of the European Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (EuroCham), Corinne Danielle Tap, expressed the view that the Indonesian government has rightly recognised the need to increase private-sector investment in technology development.

She said this would enhance the competitiveness and efficiency of the national industry, as well as deliver economic benefits to Indonesia and society as a whole.

“We fully support the efforts undertaken by the Indonesian government to drive innovation in the technology sector for the sake of sustainable economic growth. This can certainly be achieved if businesses work together with the government as policymaker to encourage innovative policies that develop a sustainable economy,” she explained.

Meanwhile, the European Union Ambassador to Indonesia, Vincent Guérend, specifically underlined that the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and Indonesia (CEPA), currently under negotiation with the Indonesian government, promises a range of opportunities for both parties to further drive economic development in the country.

“The EU-CEPA agreement will provide a stronger framework for bilateral trade and investment relations, as well as create new market access for the EU and Indonesia. This agreement will bring capital investment and the transfer of advanced technology, along with knowledge vital for developing the skills of Indonesia’s human resources,” he said.
