BKPM: Business Identification Number Eases Access to Coaching and Financing for MSMEs

The Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) has highlighted the importance of owning a Business Identification Number (NIB) for micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) players, as it eases access to government coaching and financing facilities. “The thing MSME players often forget is legality. The NIB is the official identity that proves the business is legal. By having an NIB, the opportunity to receive coaching from central and regional governments is wide open, including easier access to financing,” said Riyatno, Deputy for Investment Climate Development at the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, in a confirmed statement in Jakarta on Wednesday. Speaking at the UMKM SCALE HUB event in Banyumas, Central Java, on Monday, he noted that business legality not only provides legal certainty but also opens access to various coaching programmes and financing facilities. Meanwhile, Ayu Heni Rosan, Advisor to the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) of the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, highlighted the vital role of women in supporting the family economy and encouraged participants to continue adapting to technological developments and business competition dynamics. “Women have an extraordinary role. Many mothers in various regions are able to take care of their families while managing a business. Empowered women will help build healthy and happy families, as well as become role models for their children,” said Ayu Rosan. Previously, the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises stressed the importance of NIB ownership for business actors as it is a requirement to access various business facilities, including government programmes. Bagus Rachman, Deputy for Medium Enterprises at the Ministry of MSMEs, stated that the NIB is an official identity showing the legality and classification of a business. “With an NIB, they can enter government programmes that provide affirmation,” Bagus told reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday. According to him, NIB ownership also makes it easier for business actors to obtain access to financing because their business status and legality are officially recorded. Based on information from the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, the number of business actors who have obtained an NIB reached approximately 16 million in 2025. This figure is still lower than the total number of national MSMEs, which is estimated to reach around 56 million business units. To encourage more MSMEs to have business legality, the Ministry of MSMEs is developing the Sapa UMKM platform, which will integrate various services across ministries and agencies.
