JAKARTA – PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (Persero), or BKI, is reviewing the documents and technical record of the motor ferry KMP Batu Mandi following a fire in the waters of the Sunda Strait, near Merak Besar Island, Cilegon, Banten, on Tuesday (20 October 2026).

BKI Director of Classification Operations Arief Budi Permana said the review covers the vessel’s classification status, survey history and certifications within BKI’s remit. The process is intended to help provide stakeholders with accurate technical data and documentation.

“In connection with the incident, BKI is reviewing the relevant documents and technical record of the vessel, including its classification status, survey history and certifications within BKI’s remit,” Arief said in a written statement.

Arief said the review forms part of BKI’s attention to vessel safety. The information gathered is expected to serve as a reference for stakeholders, in line with their respective needs and authority.

He explained that BKI carries out vessel classification, surveys and certification in accordance with its assignments and applicable authority. These duties are performed through technical inspections, surveys and verification against relevant requirements.

Arief stressed that applying maritime safety standards requires collaboration among various parties, including the government, vessel owners and operators, and other parts of the maritime industry.

“Together with the Government, in this case the Ministry of Transportation, vessel owners and operators, and the entire Indonesian maritime sector, BKI will continue to work together to uphold safety standards and foster a safe, reliable and sustainable maritime ecosystem,” he said.

BKI also expressed concern over the fire aboard KMP Batu Mandi and hoped that all passengers, crew members and affected parties would receive the assistance they need.

BKI reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out its duties professionally and supporting the implementation of maritime safety standards in accordance with applicable regulations.
