Bird's Eye Chilli Prices Plummet in Gedhe Klaten Market
The price of chilli commodities in Gedhe Klaten Market, Central Java, has fallen sharply this week. Meanwhile, essential goods are sufficient during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 2026.
Monitoring by Media Indonesia at the traditional market on Thursday (26/2), showed that the most significant price decrease occurred in red bird’s eye chillies, from IDR 110,000 to IDR 76,000 per kilogram.
“The price of bird’s eye chillies has fallen drastically, now at IDR 76,000 per kilogram. The price decrease occurred after the supply of chillies from production areas returned to normal, while consumer demand decreased,” said Ponijem, a trader.
For curly chillies and large chillies, prices also fell this week. The price of curly chillies fell from IDR 50,000 to IDR 32,000 per kilogram, and the price of large chillies is now IDR 35,000, down from IDR 25,000 per kilogram.
Unlike chilli commodities, the prices of other essential goods remain stable. For example, red onions remain at IDR 40,000 per kilogram, garlic at IDR 33,000 per kilogram, and bulk granulated sugar at IDR 17,500 per kilogram.
Then, cooking oil is IDR 18,000 per litre, Minyakita cooking oil is IDR 15,700 per litre, IR-64 rice is IDR 14,000 per kilogram, chicken eggs are IDR 29,000 per kilogram, chicken meat is IDR 37,000 per kilogram, and beef is IDR 125,000 per kilogram.
The Head of Gedhe Klaten Market, Purwadi, when met, confirmed that chilli prices have started to fall this week. The decrease in chilli prices is likely due to the normalisation of supply, while consumer demand has decreased.
“However, the prices of other essential goods in this market are relatively stable, such as rice and cooking oil. In addition, the supply and availability are sufficient during Ramadan until Eid al-Fitr 2026,” he said. (H-2)
Based on monitoring at Gedhe Klaten Market on Sunday (22/2), the price of red bird’s eye chillies at retail traders had reached IDR 110,000 per kilogram.

Broiler chicken eggs fell from IDR 32,000 per kilogram to IDR 30,000 per kilogram and cut chicken meat from IDR 42,000 to IDR 40,000 per kilogram.
The price of red bird’s eye chillies soared from IDR 100,000 to IDR 140,000 per kilogram. In addition to demand, weather factors also have a major impact.
