Biosolar Should Not Be Stored for Long Periods, as Its Quality Can Deteriorate

SOLO, KOMPAS.com - Hoarding biosolar for long periods is highly inadvisable. Besides being an illegal practice, the quality of this type of fuel cannot withstand prolonged storage.

Biosolar essentially does not have an expiry date like food or beverages. This means there is no specific date after which the fuel immediately becomes unusable.

However, this does not mean biosolar can be stored indefinitely without risk. In practice, the quality of biosolar can decline if stored for too long, particularly in vehicle tanks or unsuitable containers.

What actually occurs is a change in the chemical and physical properties of the fuel due to environmental influences.

“One of the main causes is water contamination. Water can enter through condensation in the tank, especially during temperature changes between day and night,” said Esa to KOMPAS.com recently.

These microorganisms can produce sludge or sediment that disrupts the fuel system. If left unchecked, the sediment can clog filters and diesel injectors.

“We once conducted research on biosolar mixed with a separating agent; the result was that water sediment collected at the bottom, indicating a high water content that can impair diesel engine performance,” said Esa.

As a result, engine performance can decline. The engine may feel heavier, be difficult to start, or even stutter during operation.

Therefore, there is a recommended usage timeframe, even if unofficial. Ideally, biosolar should be used relatively soon after refuelling, particularly if the vehicle is infrequently used.

Additionally, storage conditions play a significant role. A clean tank that is tightly sealed and minimally exposed to air can help preserve biosolar quality for longer.

Area Manager for Communication, Relations, and CSR in Central Java, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Taufiq Kurniawan, stated that hoarding fuel for illegal resale purposes is a criminal act.
