BINUS prepares talent to face changes in the global workforce in the AI era
Jakarta (ANTARA) - BINUS University is pushing for the strengthening of digital talent competencies as the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into work processes, altering industry requirements for professionals.
Nicholas Dominic, Senior Data Scientist & AI Consultant at the Cloud Solutions Department of Lintasarta Cluldeka, stated that the development of AI is shifting from being merely a tool to becoming an integral part of work processes, which in turn changes industry demand for talent.
“Companies require individuals who possess not only technical abilities but are also capable of understanding business problems, reading data critically, collaborating, and determining how AI can be used appropriately to produce impactful solutions,” he said in a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday.
He noted that the trend of AI utilisation in the workplace is showing increasing strength. Data from the Microsoft Work Trend Index 2026 recorded that 33 per cent of workers in Indonesia have entered the category of advanced AI users, more than twice the global average of 16 per cent.
In the survey, 62 per cent of respondents in Indonesia assessed that critical thinking skills are becoming increasingly important in the AI era. Meanwhile, 60 per cent assessed that the ability to perform quality control on AI outputs is a competency that is increasingly required.
According to him, the connection between education and industry is becoming increasingly vital to ensure that student competencies remain relevant to professional needs.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital projects that Indonesia will require approximately 12 million digital talents by 2030. However, to date, there remains a gap of about 3 million talents that needs to be addressed.
These changing requirements are prompting universities to strengthen AI learning so that it does not stop at technical skills, but also equips students with critical thinking, business understanding, and the ability to apply technology ethically and responsibly.
The Dean of the School of Computer Science at BINUS University, Prof. Dr. Ir. Derwin Suhartono, assessed that the challenge for the younger generation ahead is not merely mastering AI, but being able to work alongside the technology.
“The important question today is no longer whether AI will replace humans, but whether the younger generation possesses the competence to work alongside AI,” he said.
The Artificial Intelligence programme at BINUS @Bekasi is designed to equip students with an understanding of AI development, as well as the ability to evaluate and apply technological results to solve real-world problems.
The Director of the BINUS @Bekasi Campus, Prof. Gatot Soepriyanto, stated that the development of AI education in Bekasi is relevant to the region’s character, which possesses a dynamic ecosystem of industry, business, services, and technology.
“We want AI learning not to stop at technological understanding, but also to be able to be translated into solutions that provide value to industry, business, and society,” he said.
Through the Artificial Intelligence Programme at BINUS @Bekasi, BINUS University hopes to expand access to AI education while preparing talent capable of connecting technology with the needs of industry and society. This step is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of the Indonesian workforce within the development of an AI-based economy.
