Binus Anggrek Campus Fire in West Jakarta: Fire Brigade Still Investigating Cause and Casualties
A fire at the Anggrek Auditorium of Binus University in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, on Friday morning, 22 May 2026, was extinguished. The cause is under investigation by police and fire personnel, with no conclusion yet on whether an electrical fault or other factor sparked the blaze. Police and the Fire Department are continuing the investigation. Reported at around 05:30 local time, the incident prompted the deployment of 12 fire engines and around 60 personnel to the scene. The ignition point is believed to be in the auditorium on the fifth floor; on arrival, the room was filled with thick smoke, making search and access difficult. Firefighters had to enter wearing breathing apparatus to fight the flames and locate hotspots. They faced difficulty locating the fire due to dense smoke and subsequently opened ceiling panels down to the corridor to prevent spread. Officials said there were no large hotspots remaining and that the fire did not appear to have spread to other rooms. Preliminary checks indicate the blaze was confined to the fifth-floor auditorium. The police are handling the ongoing investigation. As of this report, there were no fatalities. Police have cordoned off the area for further inquiries. Cooling procedures have concluded, and authorities are now focusing on ensuring no hidden hotspots remain.
