Binjai Police Clarify Allegations Regarding Release of Assault Suspects
The Binjai Police, through the Criminal Investigation Unit, have emphasised that circulating information regarding alleged ‘catch and release’ practices in the handling of an assault case reported by a police officer, Sandran Ginting, is incorrect. The police stated that this clarification is necessary to prevent misunderstandings within the community.
The Head of Criminal Investigation at Binjai Police, AKP Hizkia Siagian, explained that investigators never actually arrested the suspects in this case. The suspects had been cooperatively responding to summons from investigators for questioning, meaning there was no instance of arrest or subsequent release as suggested by recent rumours.
“We must emphasise that the term ‘catch and release’ is inaccurate in this case, as investigators never performed any arrests. What occurred was the questioning of suspects who attended summons cooperatively,” AKP Hizkia stated in a written briefing on Sunday, 7 June 2026.
Furthermore, he noted that the decision to detain or not detain suspects remains within the authority of the investigators, based on legal considerations in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP), both objectively and subjectively. The decision not to detain does not imply that the legal process has been halted or that the suspects have been absolved of legal responsibility.
“The investigation of the case continues as normal. All stages of the case handling are being conducted professionally, proportionally, transparently, and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations,” he added.
The Binjai Police also urged the public not to be easily influenced by unverified opinions or information. Every case handled will be processed based on evidence, legal facts, and the mechanisms regulated by law, without being influenced by external pressure or public opinion. The Binjai Police remain committed to maintaining professionalism, objectivity, and accountability in all legal proceedings to ensure legal certainty and justice for all parties involved.
