Bina Marga Upgrades Kebon Sirih Road with Concrete for Stronger Infrastructure
The phasing scheme has been adopted to minimise the impact on traffic flow whilst the works are under way.
Jakarta (ANTARA) — The Highways Department (Dinas Bina Marga) of DKI Jakarta Province is upgrading Jalan Kebon Sirih in Central Jakarta using the concrete pavement method, in an effort to deliver stronger infrastructure.
Siti Dinarwenny, Head of the Data and Information Centre at the DKI Jakarta Highways Department, said the works will run from 9 July until September 2026 along a 345-metre section, from Wisma Penta to the building of the National Border Management Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (BNPP RI).
“The upgrading of Jalan Kebon Sirih forms part of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government’s commitment to maintaining road infrastructure of a stronger, safer and more comfortable quality, in order to support public mobility as well as governmental activity and the economy in the city centre,” said Dinar when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Monday.
Dinar explained that Jalan Kebon Sirih was chosen because it is one of Jakarta’s strategic corridors, carrying a high volume of traffic.
The section provides access to numerous offices, government buildings and centres of public activity, and therefore requires reliable road quality.
Beyond the high traffic intensity, the road’s considerable age and recurring damage were also main considerations in carrying out the improvement of the section.
Dinar disclosed that the works are being carried out in stages to maintain the smooth flow of public mobility during the construction process.
The stages begin with the central lane, then proceed to the right-hand lane, and finish with the left-hand lane.
“This scheme has been adopted to minimise the impact on traffic flow whilst the works are under way,” she said.
Dinar further stated that concrete (rigid) pavement was chosen because it offers better resistance to vehicle loads, particularly on sections frequently used by heavily laden vehicles.
The material is also considered capable of addressing damage caused by the road’s service life, extending its service life, and at the same time reducing the need for routine maintenance.
In addition, a more stable road surface is expected to improve the safety and comfort of road users.
The Highways Department has urged the public to comply with traffic arrangements and follow officers’ instructions whilst the works are in progress.
“The government also invites the public to support the smooth execution of the works, so that the upgrading of Jalan Kebon Sirih can bring benefits to residents’ mobility, the quality of the area, and social and economic activity in the heart of the capital,” she said.
