Bina Marga Undertakes Phased Clean-Up of Chaotic Cables in Kalideres

The West Jakarta Bina Marga Sub-department has confirmed it is working with relevant associations to carry out a phased clean-up after residents complained about chaotic overhead cables, particularly in the Kalideres area. Khairul Imam, Head of the Infrastructure, Facilities and City Utilities (PSUK) and Public Street Lighting (PJU) Section at West Jakarta Bina Marga, stated the action is the city government’s response to public grievances regarding the tangled cables. “The clean-up process is currently ongoing. West Jakarta Bina Marga, together with the Association of Telecommunication Network Operators (APJATEL) and utility network owners, is gradually relocating cables that were previously overhead to underground networks,” Khairul said when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday. Once the relocation process is complete, unused overhead cables will be cut and removed. “These stages need to be carried out in phases so that public telecommunications services continue to operate without disruption,” Khairul added. Specifically regarding reports from residents in the Kalideres area, Khairul said work on tidying and cutting overhead cables is still continuing. “Including along the corridors of Jalan Peta Utara, Jalan Peta Barat, Jalan Peta Selatan, and Jalan Utan Jati, with a target of completion by the end of the year,” he noted. Khairul said his team continues to coordinate with APJATEL and operators to accelerate completion so the clean-up can reach all locations. “We appreciate input from residents and are striving to promote a more orderly utility network arrangement for the community,” he said. Khairul mentioned that West Jakarta Bina Marga has relocated 6,087 metres of utility cables underground along the corridors of Jalan Peta Utara, Jalan Peta Barat, Jalan Peta Selatan, and Jalan Utan Jati in 2026. However, the clean-up process is still ongoing because the chaotic overhead cables still need to be trimmed or removed. Previously, chaotic overhead utility cables dangling towards the road increasingly worried residents on Jalan Peta Barat and Jalan Peta Selatan in Kalideres, West Jakarta. A resident named Adit claimed that almost every day large trucks get snagged on dangling cables in the area. Additionally, Adit and other residents often have to move aside cables that eventually snap after being caught by trucks. “If a cable breaks, we take the initiative to move it aside immediately before there are any victims,” Adit told reporters at the location on Tuesday. During an interview on Wednesday afternoon, a large truck passed by and snagged an overhead cable at the site. Adit then ran and fixed the cable that had snapped after being caught by the large truck. “Luckily it didn’t hit any other passing motorists,” he said. Adit revealed that the broken chaotic cables frequently claim victims. He even admitted to having prepared betadine, plasters, and other medical supplies in anticipation of riders falling due to snagged cables. Adit hopes the government will pay attention to the problem of chaotic overhead cables in this area because many victims have fallen. “So the cable breaks after being hit by a truck, then it dangles and hits a passing motorbike, causing the rider to fall. If possible, please tidy them up so they don’t cause disruption,” he said.
