Bina Marga Reveals Why the Damaged Tendean Footbridge Could Not Be Repaired
The footbridge on Jalan Kapten Tendean, South Jakarta, has been completely demolished. The structure was dismantled by the DKI Jakarta Highways Agency (Bina Marga) after it was struck by a truck transporting heavy equipment in the early hours of Tuesday, 14 July 2026.
Monitoring at the location on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, at 11:00 WIB confirmed that the demolition was complete. Traffic flow in the area was observed to be smooth in both directions, with no debris remaining on the road.
The severe impact caused fatal damage to the footbridge, making repairs impossible. Consequently, Bina Marga decided to proceed with demolition. “The DKI Jakarta Provincial Highways Agency has confirmed that the footbridge will not be repaired, but will be demolished immediately,” said Siti Dinarwenny, Head of the Data and Information Centre for the DKI Jakarta Highways Agency, in a written statement on Wednesday.
She explained that the decision was based on a technical field assessment. The agency determined that the structure had suffered severe damage and was no longer fit for operation. Furthermore, the damage posed a potential hazard that could endanger the safety of road users and disrupt traffic flow in the area.
The demolition of the public access bridge was completed by Tuesday evening, allowing traffic on Jalan Tendean to be accessed from both directions.
The incident occurred when a truck carrying heavy equipment became stuck while passing under the footbridge in the early hours of Tuesday. The resulting traffic jam, particularly during the morning rush hour, prompted DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung to instruct the Transportation Agency and other regional apparatus organisations to resolve the congestion.
Police have since detained the truck driver. Head of Operational Development at the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate, Commissioner Robby Hefados, stated that the driver, named Jony Anri Siahaan, was being questioned. “He is currently being questioned at the police station,” Robby said on Tuesday. The police are continuing to investigate the cause of the incident and are looking into possible negligence or violations by the driver that led to the truck becoming lodged under the bridge.
