Deputy Minister of Home Affairs (Wamendagri) Bima Arya Sugiarto has asserted that the most fundamental difference between an ordinary person and an extraordinary one is vision. According to him, vision is the primary distinction between a leader and a follower, while discipline is the key to realising that vision. This message was delivered by Bima whilst providing guidance to students of the ‘Ben Mboi’ Polytechnic at the Defence University (Unhan) in Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Saturday (27/6). On that occasion, he invited the students to imagine themselves 20 years into the future as a foundation for preparing to become future leaders. “If you already know where you are heading, what you will be doing, and what responsibilities you will be developing, you have sorted yourselves out; you have a vision. That is the most important thing,” Bima said in his statement. Beyond vision, Bima emphasised the importance of maintaining the mind and body. He admitted that in his own life journey, he only later realised the importance of consistently maintaining stamina and physical fitness. He believes that those who are disciplined in caring for their mind and body will remain in prime condition when others begin to lose their fighting spirit. He assessed that Unhan students have already gained an advantage because they are nurtured to have the physical and mental readiness to face future challenges, similar to other official training schools. “Because when the time comes, what will determine who wins and who loses is not only vision, but also the mind and body. I say mind and body, not just the body, but also the mind. Your thoughts determine your words. Your words determine your actions. Your actions determine your character,” he explained. Furthermore, Bima encouraged the students to learn from people who consistently maintain discipline. He argued that it is impossible for someone to lead, work hard, and struggle if their mind and body are not in prime condition. Therefore, he urged the students to maintain their stamina and health with discipline. Finally, Bima advised the students not to waste the opportunity to study at Unhan. He reminded them of the importance of maintaining discipline until the end of their education, building a positive social environment, and preserving a circle of friends who support each other in good deeds. “Stay within the orbit of leaders. Nurture it; you must all look after each other. Look to your right, look to your left, and always remember your friends. You must be in a circle that helps one another in goodness,” he concluded.
