Bima Arya Stresses Importance of Continuity in Leadership

Deputy Minister of Home Affairs (Wamendagri) Bima Arya Sugiarto has stressed the importance of continuity in leadership as one of the keys to successful development. Bima stated that personal and sectoral egos must be set aside. He made these remarks during a speech at the Welcome Dinner for the Regional Leadership Consolidation Course (KPPD) Batch III of 2026 at the National Resilience Institute of the Republic of Indonesia (Lemhannas RI), Trigatra Building, Jakarta, on Tuesday (14/7). Bima highlighted the tendency of regional heads to prioritise their own programmes, thereby ignoring the achievements of their predecessors. Yet, according to him, continuity is a crucial foundation for a nation’s progress. “The key to the success of Singapore, China, and others is sustainability, continuity,” Bima said in a written statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs. He cited the leadership transition in Singapore as an example of how to maintain consistency in the direction of development. A change in leadership, he said, does not sever ongoing programmes but instead reinforces the ideology and development agenda. “How the leadership transition in Singapore not only runs smoothly but also strengthens the ideology and development programmes. There is no sectoral ego, no programmatic ego, and so on,” he said. Bima added that a leader should not only pursue existence, achievement, or recognition, but must also be a figure who provides inspiration and creates space for contemplation for others. He therefore expressed hope that the learning process undertaken by the KPPD participants, including the training at Lemhannas RI and the subsequent learning from Singaporean leaders, would be part of a journey towards more meaningful leadership quality.
