Bill Gates Reveals Why the AI Industry Remains Silent on Technological Dangers
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has issued a stern warning regarding the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and the manner in which the technology industry discusses its risks. Gates stated that those who most deeply understand AI’s capabilities are actually far more concerned in private conversations than what they convey to the public.
According to Gates, the reluctance of some tech executives to speak candidly is inseparable from the massive financial interests involved in the AI race. The industry currently requires enormous levels of investment to build data centres, train new models, and maintain competition between tech giants.
“They are now telling each other, ‘Don’t say that. Gates used this imagery to explain the pressure that he believes prevents some industry players from being too open about their concerns regarding AI.
Gates did not claim that all AI companies are conspiring to hide the technology’s dangers. However, he assessed that market incentives may clash with public interests when companies are racing to develop technology while simultaneously raising capital on a massive scale.
The warning is particularly striking because Gates has been known for decades as one of the technology figures optimistic about innovation. Gates believes that AI is, for the first time, capable of replacing and even surpassing human cognitive abilities in several fields. He estimates that this change will occur within a few years or a decade, far faster than previous technological transformations which required several generations.
Gates’ stance on the speed of innovation has also shifted. He stated that he would consider supporting a truly credible plan to slow down AI progress globally, although he himself doubts this would be easy to achieve due to the economic and geopolitical pressures driving nations and companies to continue the race.

Reuters reported that Gates is now also pushing for international discussions to limit AI risks, including the possibility of artificial intelligence systems being used in biological attacks. He plans to bring these ideas to discussions with several world leaders and technology companies.
