Bill Gates Assesses Four Job Sectors as the Hardest for AI to Replace

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has once again become a focal point in the debate over the future of work amidst the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. Various technology media outlets have summarised his view that at least four job sectors are expected to be among the hardest for AI to replace: programmers, biologists, energy experts, and professional athletes. The claim, however, did not originate from a single statement by Gates declaring only four jobs are safe from AI. The formulation emerged from combining several of his remarks made on different occasions. LADbible reported on Thursday, 25 June 2026, that Gates ‘now says just four jobs’ will survive, merging three previously mentioned professions—coders, biologists, and energy workers—with professional athletes. Windows Central, on the same day, also wrote that athletes are the fourth field likely to be relatively safe from AI replacement. The strongest statement regarding athletes came when Gates appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The programme was recorded at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, NBC Studios, in Manhattan, New York. Complex reported that Gates attended the interview on Tuesday, 4 February 2025, to discuss his memoir, Source Code. During the interview, Fallon asked about the impact of AI and whether humans would still be needed. Gates responded that humans will still decide which parts of life they want to preserve as human activities. ‘Well, we’ll decide,’ Gates said, as reported by Laptop Mag on Saturday, 8 February 2025. He then gave the example of sports, stating, ‘We won’t want to watch computers play baseball.’ This remark was subsequently interpreted by several media outlets as a signal that professional athletes are among the fields hardest to replace with AI. The reasoning is not purely about physical capability, but because sports thrive on emotion, rivalry, identity, and the audience’s connection to the human competitors. Regarding the programming field, Gates has repeatedly stressed the importance of the human role. On the People by WTF podcast hosted by Zerodha founder Nikhil Kamath, Gates dismissed fears that AI will soon replace software engineers. Moneycontrol reported the statement on Tuesday, 18 June 2024, after the podcast episode was released on Friday, 14 June 2024. ‘We still need those software engineers as we are not going to stop needing them,’ Gates said. Gates expressed a similar view in an interview with Axios ahead of the launch of his memoir, Source Code, on Monday, 3 February 2025. He stated that coding and mathematics skills remain essential even as computers and AI become increasingly capable of performing many technical tasks. ‘It’s like questioning whether someone still needs to learn multiplication just because a computer can do it very well,’ Gates told Axios. According to Gates, understanding the basics of mathematics and coding helps people comprehend how AI works. He believes knowledge of the ‘inner workings’ of AI remains important because the technology can appear highly intelligent in one context but mistaken in another. In other words, AI can assist with writing code, but humans are still needed to understand problems, make decisions, correct errors, and determine the purpose of the technology.
