Bill Gates: AI usage without safeguards is irresponsible
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates believes that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) without safeguards and the ability to monitor the technology constitutes an irresponsible act.
According to Gates, the greater concern arises when parties with malicious intent exploit AI capabilities, such as assisting in bioterrorism or conducting large-scale financial fraud.
“The most dangerous thing we face right now is people with bad intentions using AI. There has never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with bad intentions using the latest AI tools,” Gates stated during an interview on the ‘Meet the Press’ programme, as reported by Engadget on Sunday.
Regarding regulation, Gates supports the involvement of law enforcement and politicians in discussions concerning the protections and monitoring that must be implemented within AI companies.
The former Microsoft executive noted that while such an approach would increase the operational burden on the industry, it would not cause a “dramatic slowdown” in ongoing development.
Following agreements by several leading AI CEOs to slow the pace of AI development, Bill Gates has voiced his support for the move and called for stricter regulation and security measures.
