Bilateral Meeting with New York Mayor: Pramono Discusses Jakarta's Traffic Solutions
Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo presented Jakarta’s strategies for overcoming traffic congestion and developing public transport to New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani during a bilateral meeting at Civic Hall, New York, on Sunday (20/9).
During the meeting, Mamdani specifically explored Jakarta’s strategies for tackling congestion and expanding public transportation networks.
Pramono explained the development of the Transjabodetabek service as an effort to strengthen Jakarta’s connectivity with its surrounding satellite cities while simultaneously reducing the use of private vehicles.
“Every day, more than four million people enter and exit Jakarta, especially during peak hours. Through Transjabodetabek, we aim to reduce congestion and the volume of vehicles entering Jakarta while strengthening regional connectivity,” Pramono stated, as quoted from an official statement on Monday.
Furthermore, Pramono informed Mamdani that the Jakarta Provincial Government provides free public transport services to 15 groups of people, including the elderly, persons with disabilities, as well as students receiving the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) and university students receiving the Jakarta Superior Student Card (KJMU).
In addition, Pramono outlined Jakarta’s efforts to manage flooding through the construction of flood control infrastructure, the reduction of groundwater extraction to curb land subsidence, and the development of the Giant Sea Wall.
“Similar to New York, one of Jakarta’s challenges is flooding. Therefore, we continue to strengthen flood control infrastructure, reduce groundwater usage to mitigate land subsidence, and develop the Giant Sea Wall,” Pramono said.
