Bigamist divorces six of 10 wives
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): A Singaporean bigamist jailed here for marrying more than the Moslem quota of four wives has divorced his six extra spouses, a report said yesterday.
Abdul Talib Harun, a 35-year-old self-styled religious teacher in Malaysia's southern state of Johore, divorced his six "contractual" wives last Friday, the Sunday Star reported. Abdul Talib was sentenced to 24 months jail in July last year for "marrying" the six other women under contract, an offense under Malaysian religious laws which only allow four legal wives.
He was also fined 14,000 ringgit (US$5,600) by the Islamic family court.
The six contractual wives were slapped with jail sentences of three months each for illicit sex, while Abdul Talib's four legal wives served one month's jail each for conspiring with him.
