Biennial Yogyakarta 2003 opens

YOGYAKARTA: Biennale Yogyakarta 2003 opened on Friday night, featuring the art works of local artists at the Socitet Building on Jl. Sriwedari 1, Yogyakarta.

The art festival, which is also called "Countrybution" will run until Oct. 31.

Among the best-known artists are Dadang Christanto, Heri Dono, Mella Jaarsma, Anusapati, Bunga Jeruk, Agus Suwage, Bambang "Toko" Witjaksono, Dipo Andy, Handiwirman Saputra, Hanura Hosea, Nano Warsono and S. Teddy D.

The event is jointly organized by TBY Yogyakarta Cultural Center and non-profit art project organizer, Antena Projects. The first of the biennial exhibitions was held in 1988 but was disrupted by the 1998 economic crisis.

The prolonged crisis does not allow the exhibition to take place regularly, said Suprapto, the director of the Yogyakarta Cultural Center. --JP
