Jakarta (ANTARA) - Flooding that continues to inundate parts of Tanjung Lengkong in Bidara Cina subdistrict, Jatinegara district, East Jakarta, has not dampened residents' enthusiasm for seeking out takjil, the snacks and drinks traditionally consumed when breaking the Ramadan fast.

Observations at the location at around 17:00 WIB showed rows of takjil vendors beginning to fill with buyers. Although some road access remained wet and muddy from the floodwaters, residents appeared eager to choose from a variety of food and drinks for their iftar meal. Several children were seen carrying plastic bags, whilst housewives busied themselves selecting fried snacks, kolak and fruit ice drinks.

One resident, Sabil (38), said his house had been submerged in floodwater exceeding 100 centimetres since the early hours of Friday. Despite being exhausted from cleaning up the remaining mud, Sabil still made time to buy takjil for his family.

"The water keeps rising and it's still at that level now. We still have to break our fast, so we still buy fried snacks, lontong and kolak. If you stay at home just thinking about the flood, you feel even more worn out. So we just carry on as normal and buy takjil," said Sabil.

A similar sentiment was expressed by Rahmat (45), another resident whose home is situated not far from the banks of the Ciliwung River. Rahmat said this round of flooding had arrived since 05:00 WIB following heavy rain in the upstream areas.

"Fasting carries on regardless. So we need food to break our fast, and we just buy as usual," said Rahmat.

Flooding has once again inundated the Tanjung Lengkong area of Bidara Cina subdistrict, Jatinegara district, East Jakarta, with water levels reaching up to 1.7 metres.

Bidara Cina subdistrict head Suhartono said heavy rain that had been lashing southern Jakarta since the early hours of Friday was the primary cause of rising water levels in the area.

"Since dawn, at around 04:30 WIB, heavy rain has been continuously falling across the southern areas. Based on early flood warnings, the status at Katulampa, Manggarai and Depok had reached alert level three," said Suhartono at the Bidara Cina subdistrict office in East Jakarta on Friday.

Water levels reached 170 centimetres at the deepest point, specifically at Gang Macan RT 05/RW 07. Water began entering residential areas at around 11:00 WIB and continued to rise through the afternoon.
