Bidadari Island manages waste shipments from Jakarta

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the Thousand Islands Environmental Agency (Sudin LH) Achmad Hariadi said the management of Bidadari Island handles waste that comes not only from tourism activities in the local area, but also waste sent from mainland Jakarta.

“Over three months, the total incoming waste in the area (from mainland Jakarta) can reach 900 tonnes,” Achmad said in Jakarta on Thursday.

To address this problem, he said, the Thousand Islands Environmental Agency is working with the Mas Jos community (Jagonya Olah Sampah, or Waste Processing Champions) to provide independent waste processing facilities.

Plastic waste that has no economic value is crushed using machines to reduce the volume of waste taken to the Final Processing Site (TPA).

“This programme, which has been running for two weeks, is expected to be a catalyst for other islands in the Thousand Islands, both residential islands and resort islands,” Achmad said.

According to him, the Waste Segregation and Processing from Source Movement carried out on the resort island is an effort by the Thousand Islands Regency Government together with the private sector to realise the Zero Waste Island concept in the DKI Jakarta area.

Fadjar said the strategy being implemented is no longer merely about collecting and transporting waste, but rather through a strict segregation process from the source.

Furthermore, he explained that waste management from the source on Bidadari Island is carried out by processing waste into Liquid Organic Fertiliser (POC), while plastic waste is processed into plastic pellets or channelled to waste banks for recycling.

In its implementation, PT Sea Breeze Indonesia as the manager of Bidadari Island is also synergising with the Indonesia Menuju Hijau community and five waste sorting workers from the informal sector.

“They are collaborating to implement independent waste management from upstream to downstream,” Fadjar said.
