In the future, we are committed to continuing to encourage more strategic collaborations to strengthen payment system integration and support closer digital economic connectivity between Korea and Indonesia.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) has announced that Indonesians can now make transactions or payments in South Korea using QRIS through domestic applications without needing to exchange foreign currency.

Transactions are conducted directly in the local currencies of both countries, making them more efficient and low-cost.

“The connectivity of cross-border QR payments not only facilitates transactions but also strengthens SMEs, boosts tourism, and opens new opportunities for businesses, thereby supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” said BI Governor Perry Warjiyo in an official statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

On Wednesday (1/4), BI and the Bank of Korea officially launched the Indonesia-South Korea cross-border QR payment connectivity.

The official launch of the cross-border QR payment connectivity was conducted by BI Governor Perry Warjiyo and Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Korea Sangdai Ryoo, marked by a ceremony held simultaneously in Indonesia and South Korea.

Perry stated that this launch represents an important step in realising the shared vision of Indonesia and South Korea to build an integrated, efficient, and inclusive payment system as the foundation for digital economic connectivity between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Korea Chang Cheong-soo stated that the launch of the Indonesia-South Korea cross-border QR marks an important milestone reflecting the increasingly close cooperation between the two countries, particularly in strengthening the digital economy and finance.

BI stated that the successful implementation of the Indonesia-South Korea cross-border QRIS is the result of synergy between BI, the Bank of Korea, the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), the Korea Financial Telecommunications & Clearings Institute (KFTC), and participating financial institutions.

BI and the Bank of Korea are committed to ensuring a secure, reliable, and efficient cross-border payment system to strengthen financial resilience and support inclusive economic growth.

Since its launch, BI noted, QRIS has become a major driver of digital payment transformation while strengthening Indonesia’s economic sovereignty, with the number of users reaching 60.77 million as of February 2026.

Inbound transactions in 2025 recorded 5,892,621 transactions, surpassing outbound transactions which recorded 1,681,112 transactions.

Up to February 2026, cooperation with Thailand since August 2022 has recorded 1.64 million transactions with a value of Rp656.27 billion.

Meanwhile, cooperation with Malaysia which began in May 2023 recorded a larger volume, namely 10.66 million transactions with a value of Rp2.75 trillion.

The latest cooperation with Japan since August 2025 also shows positive developments, with achievements of 5,088 transactions with a value of Rp428.80 million.
