BI has new deputy governor

JAKARTA (JP): The House of Representatives finally appointed on Thursday Aulia Pohan as deputy governor of Bank Indonesia.

Aulia received the largest vote from 32 members of the House commission IX on banking and state budget.

Aulia will be one of the six deputy governors of the central bank.

He outbid Burhanuddin Abdullah and Cyrillus Harinowo. The two are also senior officials at the central bank. The three have been proposed by Bank Indonesia Governor Sjahril Sabirin.

Aulia is actually also a deputy governor of Bank Indonesia, but his term will end next month. He would replace Iwan R. Prawiranata, whose term will also end in April.

The House earlier decided that the central bank would only have six deputy governors instead of seven.

Bank Indonesia has become an independent central bank since last year. The members of the board of governors including the Bank Indonesia Governor are picked by the House. (rei)
