Bank Indonesia (BI) governor candidate Destry Damayanti believes that credit potential in Indonesia still needs to be boosted going forward, in order to drive higher economic growth.

Destry said credit in the country still needs to be accelerated, because Indonesia’s economic cycle remains far below its optimal level.

“Credit growth can still be continuously encouraged, optimising undisbursed loans which currently reach Rp2,548 trillion or 21.8% of the ceiling,” she said during the fit and proper test for the BI Governor position on Wednesday (26/8/2026).

An undisbursed loan is a bank loan facility that has been approved and given a ceiling limit, but has not yet been drawn down or disbursed by the customer. This condition must be accompanied by efforts to boost public purchasing power, Destry said.

Destry also highlighted that MSME credit growth still needs to be encouraged as the foundation of the economy. Given these challenges, Destry sees that maintaining stability alone is not enough; BI needs to strengthen its policy mix. Therefore, BI must be adaptive in this regard.

“BI also needs to continue strengthening its policy mix so that it can support sustainable economic growth,” she said.
