Bank Indonesia (BI) is continuing aggressive measures to strengthen the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar. The policy limiting dollar purchases will be further tightened, dropping from USD 25,000 per person per month in June 2026 to USD 10,000 per entity per month starting 1 July 2026. “Strengthening prudential principles in the Money and Foreign Exchange Market (PUVA) through the implementation of a reduction in the threshold for cash purchases of foreign currency against the rupiah without underlying transactions to USD 10,000 per entity per month, effective 1 July 2026,” said BI Governor Perry Warjiyo during a press conference for the BI Board of Governors Meeting held online on Thursday (18/6/2026). Perry emphasised that BI is committed to strengthening PUVA deepening policies to make them more advanced, efficient, and prudent, in order to increase the attractiveness of foreign investment and the effectiveness of monetary policy, including rupiah exchange rate stabilisation. The step to lower the dollar purchase threshold is considered a strategic policy. In addition to this measure, BI is also expanding the PUVA ecosystem, including products, prices, participants, and infrastructure, to support the utilisation of Local Currency Transactions (LCT) with several countries in facilitating trade and investment. BI is also strengthening prudential principles in Foreign Exchange Traffic (LLD) reporting by adjusting the threshold for mandatory supporting documents for outgoing fund transfers in foreign currency from a nominal equivalent of above USD 50,000 to above USD 25,000, which will also take effect on 1 July 2026. Previously, in April 2026, BI had lowered the limit for purchasing US dollars without underlying transactions from USD 100,000 to USD 50,000 per person per month in response to the weakening trend of the rupiah exchange rate. Then, in June 2026, the restriction was further lowered to USD 25,000 per person per month. The increasingly tight restrictions are intended to help reduce pressure on the rupiah, which had briefly breached Rp 18,000 per US dollar. Starting 1 July 2026, BI will again restrict dollar purchases to USD 10,000 per person per month. This move is expected to further strengthen the stability of the rupiah exchange rate, which is currently moving around Rp 17,700 per US dollar.
