BI Further Cuts Maximum US Dollar Cash Purchase Limit to US$10,000 Per Month
Bank Indonesia (BI) has again reduced the maximum limit for cash purchases of US dollars or foreign currency without underlying documentation to just US$10,000 per person per month. A similar restriction previously imposed on 2 June 2026 had already limited foreign currency purchases to US$25,000 per person per month. “The implementation of lowering the threshold for cash purchases of foreign currency against the rupiah without underlying to US$10,000 per transactor per month,” said BI Governor Perry Warjiyo during a press teleconference on Thursday, 18 June 2026. He explained that the policy, which will take effect on 1 July 2026, is part of efforts to strengthen prudential principles in foreign exchange traffic reporting. This is achieved through adjusting the threshold for supporting documentation requirements for transferring funds abroad in foreign currency, from the equivalent of US$50,000 to US$25,000. “Which will take effect on 1 July 2026,” he stated. On 2 June 2026, BI had also imposed a rule limiting cash transactions for US dollar purchases without supporting documents to a maximum of US$25,000. Through the Board of Governors Regulation (PADG) Number 11 of 2026 concerning the Second Amendment to PADG Number 11 of 2024 on Foreign Exchange Market Transactions, the measure is described as BI’s effort to strengthen rupiah exchange rate stability amid global pressures and rising domestic foreign currency demand. The considerations section of PADG No. 11/2024 explains that in response to changes in the global and domestic strategic environment impacting rupiah exchange rate pressures, Bank Indonesia has established policies related to foreign exchange market transactions to strengthen the rupiah exchange rate. “One of which is through adjusting a certain threshold for cash purchase transactions of foreign currency against the rupiah,” as quoted from the considerations page of PADG No. 11/2024. Subsequently, in Article 25 paragraph (1), BI sets a new limit for cash purchase transactions of foreign currency against the rupiah at US$25,000 or its equivalent, per month and per foreign exchange market transactor.
