Bank Indonesia (BI) has reported that its foreign exchange reserves stood at $144.9 billion at the end of May 2026, representing a decrease of $1.3 billion from the previous month. This decline occurred alongside government foreign debt repayments and measures to stabilise the rupiah exchange rate.

The reduction took place despite additional foreign exchange inflows from the government’s global bond issuance, as well as tax and service revenues. Previously, at the end of April 2026, foreign exchange reserves were recorded at $146.2 billion.

Ramdan Denny Prakoso, Executive Director of the BI Communications Department, explained in a statement in Jakarta on Monday that exchange rate stabilisation policies were implemented in response to high uncertainty in global financial markets and seasonal domestic demand for foreign currency.

Overall, BI stated that the foreign exchange reserve position remained strong at the end of May 2026. The current amount is equivalent to 5.6 months of imports, or 5.5 months of imports plus government foreign debt payments, which remains above the international adequacy standard of approximately 3 months of imports.

BI believes that external sector resilience will remain robust, supported by adequate foreign exchange reserves and foreign capital inflows, aligned with positive investor perceptions of the national economic outlook and attractive investment yields.

“Bank Indonesia continues to enhance synergy with the Government to strengthen external resilience in order to maintain economic stability and support sustainable economic growth,” concluded Ramdan.

As background information, amidst the weakening exchange rate, Indonesia’s foreign exchange reserves have been on a downward trend since the end of December 2025. In the last five months, reserves have shrunk by $11.6 billion, or approximately 7.4 per cent, from the $156.5 billion position recorded at the end of December 2025.

Based on the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR), the rupiah exchange rate weakened by approximately 7.7 per cent (point-to-point) from Rp16,748 per US dollar at the beginning of January 2026 to Rp18,039 per US dollar at the beginning of June 2026.
