BI Encourages Tourists to Use Cross-Border QRIS

Bank Indonesia (BI) in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province is encouraging foreign tourists visiting Belitung Island to use Cross-Border QRIS alongside the upcoming opening of the international flight route from Belitung to Singapore by Scoot airline. Deputy Head of the Bank Indonesia Representative Office in Bangka Belitung, Farid Tamsil, stated that Cross-Border QRIS allows Indonesians and Singaporean tourists to conduct payment transactions using their respective countries’ payment applications. “Currently, Cross-Border QRIS can be used in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, and most recently in South Korea. Tourists no longer need to exchange physical currency, making transactions more practical and efficient,” said Farid on Tuesday, 28 April 2026. According to Farid, the opening of the international flight route from Belitung to Singapore provides an opportunity for business actors to more easily reach the global market while improving service quality for tourists. “We also want to ensure that all business actors, especially MSMEs and the tourism sector, are ready to adopt and utilise QRIS, including for cross-border transactions,” he said. Farid explained that BI is committed to continuing synergy with local government, banking, and industry to maintain ease of consumption for the public, particularly through expanding digital system acceptance, increasing literacy and education for the community, and ensuring the security and reliability of the payment system. “We believe that transaction digitalisation not only enhances public convenience in transacting but also promotes transparency and efficiency, ultimately contributing to regional economic growth,” he added. Assistant for Government and Social Welfare Affairs of the Belitung Regency Government, Paryanta, added that his side appreciates the contributions of Bank Indonesia’s Regional Digitalisation Acceleration and Expansion Team (TP2DD) in expanding local government transaction digitalisation. “The implementation of this non-cash payment channel is crucial in efforts to improve operational efficiency and tourist service quality. This step represents an acceleration of digitalisation in public areas, particularly at H. AS Hanandjoeddin Airport in Belitung, to support a modern payment ecosystem,” he said.
