Samarinda (ANTARA) - The Bank Indonesia Representative Office for East Kalimantan Province (BI Kaltim) has prepared Rp2.18 trillion in fit-for-circulation currency to meet public demand during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah/2026, particularly as many people prefer new banknotes during the Eid celebrations.

"To meet peak currency demand in East Kalimantan, which typically reaches 20 per cent of annual requirements, BI Kaltim has prepared Rp2.18 trillion in cash, an increase of 19.13 per cent compared to the previous year," said BI Kaltim Head Jajang Hermawan in Samarinda on Tuesday.

The preparation of fit-for-circulation currency is in accordance with Law No. 7 of 2011 on Currency, which mandates ensuring the availability of fit-for-circulation money in appropriate denominations, delivered in a timely manner to meet public needs, and secured against counterfeiting efforts, whilst upholding the principles of efficiency and national interest.

For members of the public requiring new banknotes, BI Kaltim has established exchange services in cooperation with banks across seven regencies and cities out of ten areas in East Kalimantan, namely Samarinda, Mahakam Ulu, West Kutai, Kutai Kartanegara, Bontang, East Kutai, and Berau Regency.

The three remaining areas — Balikpapan City, Paser Regency, and North Penajam Paser — fall under the jurisdiction of the BI Balikpapan Representative Office.

"Currency exchanges will be conducted from 18 February to 15 March 2026 during bank operating hours, including retail exchange services at several mosques in Samarinda, integrated services with banks at the Pramuka Building, and at 35 bank offices. This service forms part of an initiative themed 'Semarak Rupiah Ramadhan dan Berkah Idul Fitri' (Serambi)," said Jajang.

All exchange service registrations are conducted through the PINTAR application/website, with a maximum exchange of one package worth Rp5.3 million per person.
