BI DKI: Film Industry Could Become New Economic Growth Driver in Jakarta
Jakarta - The Jakarta Representative Office of Bank Indonesia (KPw BI DKI) states that the creative industry, particularly film, can become a new source of economic growth in the capital because the sector has a multiplier effect.
“This industry (film) is suitable for Jakarta because 50 per cent consists of young people,” said the Head of KPw BI DKI Jakarta, Iwan Setiawan, in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Iwan said that the creative industry, particularly film, has a “multiplier effect” and extends to almost all sectors, so it can become new economic growth in Jakarta.
In addition, the film industry is also not considered to exploit natural resources because it is a creative and innovative industry.
According to him, there are many examples of cities around the world that have successfully developed the creative industry sector, particularly film, with good results, one of which is in Busan, Seoul, South Korea, and many other cities that have succeeded in the film sector.
“Film provides an extraordinary multiplier effect to other sectors, where this industry will accelerate growth from fashion, food, transportation, and others,” he said.
Iwan added that digital growth in Jakarta is also the fastest among other cities, and this can become an important asset to boost the film sector.
Not only that, nature, culture, infrastructure, and others, said Iwan, also support creative industry players to utilise them as part of film production.
“We return to data showing that the local film industry is on the rise. There are more than 500 film titles screening in 2025, of which 270 are domestic productions,” he said.
Previously, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government strengthened international collaboration to accelerate steps to realise Jakarta as a cinema city, one of which is with Busan City, South Korea.
This was marked by the visit of the Busan Film Commission Delegation on 9–10 April 2026 at Jakarta City Hall, which became a strategic momentum in strengthening the film industry ecosystem in the capital.
The delegation was led by the Director and President of the Asian Film Commission Network (AFC Net), Kang Sung Kyu.
“Jakarta has great potential as a creative industry centre, including filmmaking. The presence of the Jakarta Film Commission in the future is expected to become an integrated service gateway that facilitates filmmakers, both domestic and foreign, to create in Jakarta,” said Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Rano Karno, in a statement in Jakarta on Monday (13/4).
Rano said that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing steps to join AFC Net, an international network that connects various film commissions in the Asian and global regions.
