At PT BHP Steel Building Products Indonesia and PT BHP Steel Indonesia, Dupont -- one of the world's leading safety consultants -- has been employed to establish occupational safety programs to identify and control hazards and to provide training to employees.
The program includes awareness-raising initiatives, the appointment of designated safety officers, safety training and regular safety audits.
Safety is also a key priority at PT Arutmin Indonesia and PT Kendilo Coal Indonesia, where the National Occupational Safety Association safety program is in operation. This program, developed in South Africa, is an internationally-recognized safety system that incorporates safety standards training and auditing to continuously improve employee safety.

PT Arutmin Indonesia and PT Kendilo Coal Indonesia have developed long-term programs to minimize the environmental impact of mining and ensure the rehabilitation of mined areas. Professional staff members work on a wide range of initiatives, including waste management, drainage control, revegetation and environmental monitoring.
In Central Sulawesi, BHP is sponsoring a US$40,000 environmental project through the globally-based organization Earthwatch. The project involves research of threatened habitats in the Togian Islands. BHP environmental employees are encouraged to provide technical assistance in the field work.
BHP supports a wide range of community development initiatives. In Kalimantan, these include providing health services, village access roads and water supplies, assisting with the building of schools and providing books and support for the construction of local mosques.
