Politics:
- relatively violence-free first direct local polls since June
- peace agreement signed between Indonesia and the Free Aceh
Movement (GAM), July
Economy:
- hosting of Infrastructure Summit, January
- weakening of rupiah, high inflation leading to high interest
rates
- two rounds of fuel price hikes, in March and October
respectively; the most recent, averaging 126 percent following
soaring world oil prices, led to widespread though relatively
violence-free protests.
Security:
- setting up of antiterror desk in Office of Coordinating
Minister for Political and Security Affairs
- Second Bali bombings in October
- main suspects of earlier bombings still at large
Disasters/outbreaks:
- coordination of post-tsunami relief and reconstruction
- efforts to deal with numerous cases of malnutrition, polio,
bird flu in collaboration with international agencies
Corruption:
- Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) starts work, revealing
corruption in the General Elections Commission and other
institutions -- however, many large-scale corruption cases remain
largely unresolved. Aceh Governor Abdullah Puteh was first senior
official sentenced to jail by new Anticorruption Court.
Human rights:
- endorsement of Law on Reconciliation and Friendship arising out
of human rights violations in East Timor
- endorsement of Law on Commission on Truth and Reconciliation
for past human rights violations
- forming of independent team to investigate murder of rights
activist Munir; trial is underway
Diplomacy:
- hosting of tsunami relief summit
- hosting of 50th commemoration of Asia-Africa Conference in
Bandung, West Java
- visits to several countries and attendance at a number of
international functions
