Bhayangkara Day vs Police Anniversary: What's the Difference? Many Still Misunderstand
The terms Hari Bhayangkara and HUT Polri are often used interchangeably every 1 July. Many people mistakenly believe they are different commemorations. In fact, both terms refer to the same moment: the anniversary of the Indonesian National Police (Polri).
On 1 July 2026, Polri commemorated the 80th Bhayangkara Day with a ceremony and a series of national activities. Although the names differ, Hari Bhayangkara and HUT Polri carry the same meaning; only the usage differs in official and everyday contexts.
Substantively, there is no difference between Hari Bhayangkara and the Police Anniversary. Both are commemorated every 1 July as the founding moment of the Indonesian National Police institution. The term HUT Polri is more commonly used by the public as a general term for the police anniversary. Meanwhile, Hari Bhayangkara is the official name used by the Polri institution in every annual commemoration. In other words, whether someone says HUT Polri or Hari Bhayangkara, both refer to the same celebration. The difference lies only in the terminology, not in the meaning or the timing.
The name ‘Bhayangkara’ holds strong historical value in Indonesia’s journey. The term originates from an elite troop during the Majapahit Kingdom era led by Mahapatih Gajah Mada. The Bhayangkara troops’ main task was to maintain the kingdom’s security and protect the king from various threats. Because of this role as security guardians, the name Bhayangkara was later adopted as the identity of the Indonesian National Police. The establishment of Bhayangkara Day is linked to the issuance of Government Decree Number 11 of 1946, which unified various police organisations in Indonesia into a single national police institution. Since then, every 1 July has been commemorated as the birthday of Polri.
The 80th Bhayangkara Day commemoration on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, took place at the Brimob Polri Training and Education complex in Cikeas, Bogor Regency. The location served as the centre for the national ceremony, which was attended by several prominent figures.
