BGN: Six Million Litres of Used Cooking Oil from MBG Programme Could Become Green Energy
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) states that around six million litres of used cooking oil from the Free Nutritious Meals Programme (MBG) has significant potential to support the development of green energy and the national circular economy.
BGN Head Dadan Hindayana said that each nutrition fulfilment service unit (SPPG) is estimated to produce around 500 to 590 litres of used cooking oil per month. With the number of SPPGs now reaching approximately 17,200 units on Java, the potential used cooking oil produced is estimated to reach 6 million litres every month.
According to Dadan, each Nutrition Fulfilment Service Unit (SPPG) uses an average of around 800 litres of cooking oil every month, most of which will turn into used cooking oil.
“Unexpectedly, each SPPG uses approximately 800 litres of cooking oil every month, of which 70 per cent will end up as used cooking oil,” said Dadan.
Dadan explained that the use of cooking oil in the SPPG environment is also limited to maintain the quality of food provided to the beneficiaries of the MBG Programme.
“It should be noted that at BGN, oil must not be used frequently; on average, a maximum of three frying sessions before it becomes used cooking oil,” said Dadan.
In addition to utilising used cooking oil, BGN is also beginning to encourage the use of alternative energy in the operational environment of SPPGs through the utilisation of natural gas networks and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in several regions to strengthen a cleaner and more efficient energy system.
Dadan assesses that the potential of millions of litres of used cooking oil can be an initial step in building collaboration for green energy development based on the circular economy, while also strengthening national energy independence.
“I think this can be an initial step for our cooperation programme, so that oil that was previously waste becomes valuable, what was thrown away becomes money,” he said.
