Jakarta – The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is tightening oversight of the eligibility of Nutrition Fulfilment Service Units (SPPG) to help ensure food safety in the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme.

Local governments or MBG task forces will inspect SPPG facilities against established indicators. Follow-up action will depend on the assessment and each kitchen’s level of eligibility, ranging from repairs to permanent closure.

BGN chief Sudaryono said SPPG inspections were a key item on the agenda at a coordination meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs and local governments.

“One of the duties mentioned is to carry out inspections. There are 14 indicators, and afterwards they have to assign a category,” Sudaryono said in a statement, quoted on Thursday (29 October 2026).

He said inspection results would be divided into four categories according to each SPPG’s eligibility. Kitchens deemed eligible may continue operating. Those requiring minor repairs may also remain open while addressing shortcomings, such as inadequate cooking equipment.

SPPG facilities requiring major repairs will have to suspend operations temporarily until deficiencies are remedied in line with inspection recommendations. This may involve installing a wastewater treatment plant (IPAL), improving room layouts and workflow, or providing adequate food-storage facilities.

The fourth category covers kitchens deemed unfit and required to close permanently. Grounds for such an assessment include kitchen surroundings that fail to meet hygiene and sanitation requirements.

“If, for example, there is a chicken coop next to the kitchen, that makes it unfit. Or if cooking takes place downstairs and there is a swiftlet nest upstairs, it is unfit and must be closed permanently,” he stressed.

He said the eligibility classification and follow-up measures were part of efforts to strengthen food safety and prevent a recurrence of incidents that could endanger beneficiaries.

As a result, oversight will focus not only on meeting facility standards but also on strong coordination between BGN, local governments and MBG task forces, so that potential risks can be addressed in accordance with the rules.
