The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) ensures nutritional adequacy in the Free Nutritious Meal Programme (MBG) through the implementation of balanced nutrition standards and strict oversight to guarantee food quality and safety for beneficiary children. Deputy for Systems and Governance at BGN, Tigor Pangaribuan, emphasised the significant attention given to ensuring that every meal served is truly nutritious and adheres to established guidelines. “Our focus in that area is to ensure that what is provided is genuinely nutritious food for the children,” Tigor stated at the Food Summit 2026 in Jakarta on Monday. He explained that the meal composition includes carbohydrates as the primary energy source, as well as animal and plant proteins to support children’s optimal growth and tissue repair. Plant proteins such as tofu and tempeh are integral to the menu, including support from local entrepreneur cooperatives that play a role in providing quality food ingredients for the MBG Programme. Additionally, animal proteins like eggs and meat are included in the daily menu to ensure children’s essential nutritional needs are met in a balanced and sustainable manner. The programme also adds milk as a complement to enhance nutritional intake, ensuring that the overall quality of the food provided is thoroughly monitored by the National Nutrition Agency. If a Service Unit for Nutritional Fulfilment (SPPG) fails to meet requirements, BGN will immediately issue a warning as an initial guidance step for programme implementers in the field. Violations such as incorrect portions or measurements can be detected through the obligation to upload daily menu photos to a portal, which is part of the digital monitoring system. Through this system, BGN can quickly monitor field implementation and issue direct warnings if discrepancies with the established standards are found. He stated that if cases such as food poisoning are discovered, BGN will immediately conduct an investigation at the school to ascertain the cause of the incident and the appropriate handling steps. If a violation of food safety standards is proven, Tigor continued, the SPPG will be immediately subjected to a temporary operational suspension until improvements are made in accordance with applicable regulations. “In the laboratory, it is checked whether there is indeed bacterial content in the served food. (The sanction if there is a violation) is an immediate temporary closure, suspension of that SPPG if proven,” he asserted. Tigor mentioned that around 1,500 SPPG have currently been suspended out of a total of approximately 27,000 units across Indonesia. “So if 1,500 out of 27,000 (SPPG), it’s actually still below 5 percent,” he said.
