BGN Chief to Add Nutrition Content Module to Free Meals Programme in Schools

The Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Sudaryono, plans to add a nutritional content module to the free nutritious meal programme (MBG) for schoolchildren. Sudaryono stated that the module would be provided through the Nutrition Fulfilment Service Units (SPPG).

This was conveyed by Sudaryono after reviewing the MBG implementation at SDN Bantarjati 9, Bogor City, West Java, on Friday (24/7/2026). Sudaryono also expressed his appreciation to SDN Bantarjati 9 for teaching students table manners before meals.

“Our plan from BGN is to add an additional module to the SPPG for school implementers, so that besides teaching the good table manners and handwashing that are already in place, we also explain the nutritional content,” Sudaryono told reporters.

Sudaryono mentioned that the module would later explain the importance of the food they consume. He believes this will influence children’s growth and development.

“For example, explaining why eating vegetables is important. We will explain this to the children. Remember, as adults, we might often forget that when we were children, small things became important when we grew up. If we enjoyed vegetables as children, we will continue to enjoy vegetables,” he said.

Sudaryono stressed that the MBG programme is one that provides free nutritious meals. However, he noted that the SPPG also strives to make the portions tastier and more substantial.

“So once again, this is not free tasty food, nor is it free food that you like. No. This is free nutritious food. We try to make it tasty and ensure the portions are appropriate. But that does not mean it is free food that you want. It is free nutritious food. We are listening to feedback regarding the menu, the presentation, and so on; we must be excellent,” he said.

Sudaryono explained that his party is also finalising coordination with relevant agencies in the regions. He promised that regions would be able to communicate with the BGN regarding the MBG.

“We will also open up more on how the Health Service or Ministry of Health, the Education Service, the Ministry of Education, and others can be involved so that we are synchronised. I apologise if previously there were communication bottlenecks; after this, God willing, under my leadership, those communication bottlenecks should no longer exist,” he stated.
