BGN Building Manager Says Glass Breakage Not the First Incident

The building manager, Martin, stated that the glass breakage at the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) building in Central Jakarta is not a new occurrence. Martin said similar incidents have happened several times since 2018 and are suspected to be caused by expansion. “This building experiences glass breakage once every one or two years. There is evidence of it. Floors 5, 6, 7, and 8 have had breakages before, and we replaced them. The suspicion is expansion,” Martin said at the BGN building, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (9/7/2026). Martin denied that the incident was related to a terrorist act or shooting. He emphasised that the glass broke due to expansion. “There was none, no terror,” he said. He explained that the glass used is tempered glass, so when it breaks, it leaves a pattern of small fragments. He said this pattern is the same as in previous incidents. “The glass is tempered. When it breaks, there are definitely these points,” he said. Martin said similar incidents have occurred since 2018. Some of the previously broken glass panes have been fitted with glass film as a mitigation measure to prevent the shards from falling directly. “Yes, there were incidents starting in 2018-2019. There is evidence of that, the glass that has been given film,” he said. Martin admitted he has called a vendor to replace the broken glass. Going forward, he said, glass panes that have not yet been fitted with film will also be installed as a safety measure. “It’s a preventive measure, right? We never know when a disaster might strike. I go to work, go home, and I never know if I’ll encounter a disaster on the road. That’s why we are implementing this, for safety, we are installing glass film on the upper floors. So if it breaks, it won’t shatter immediately. Now, it just so happens that the glass on the lower part hasn’t been fitted with film yet, so it fell straight down,” he explained. Meanwhile, Head of General Affairs at BGN, Naryana, said the glass breakage was discovered around 11:30 AM Western Indonesian Time. He confirmed there were no casualties in the incident. “It was around half-past eleven, twelve o’clock. There were no (casualties),” said Naryana. Naryana said he would coordinate with the building owner regarding the condition of the BGN building. He stated that his team would re-identify the building’s condition. “Later we will try to identify it again. The safety film we installed was a security measure. If this is dangerous, there will be other maintenance measures that can be taken,” he said. Previously, based on monitoring at the location on Thursday (9/7) at 14:36 WIB, the front glass of the BGN building was seen shattered. Shards of glass were scattered across the front yard. Black and yellow police line was seen surrounding the location. An Inafis vehicle was also present at the BGN building. Several police officers were seen processing the crime scene. Other officers were seen guarding the front of the BGN building. Police stated the glass was suspected to have broken due to hot weather. “The glass breakage at the BGN building. The glass is suspected to have broken because the outside temperature was hot while the inside was air-conditioned, causing expansion that resulted in the glass breaking,” said Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Commissioner Reynold EP Hutagalung, when confirmed on Thursday (9/7).
