Four injured in brawl

JAKARTA: Four people were severely injured after being involved in a brawl that occurred during a dangdut music performance on Jl. Lebak Bulus II, Cilandak, South Jakarta, early on Sunday morning.

Eyewitnesses said that the brawl started after a misunderstanding between four people who live in the area and another group of four as they all danced at the site. The misunderstanding turned violent as some of them had consumed alcohol.

The injured victims were Sulaiman, 25, who suffered a stab wound to his right chest; Akmal, 25, with wounds to his stomach and both of his hands; Kuanto, 23, with injuries to the fingers on his right hand; and Sulaiman, 17, who suffered bruising on his head. All victims were rushed to the nearby Fatmawati hospital for medical treatment.

Cilandak Police arrested Purwantoro, 21, a resident of Semarang, for alleged involvement in the brawl along with his friends Azis, Iwan and Rahmat. Police also seized a dagger from Purwantoro.

"We are questioning his three friends about the incident," said a policeman from Cilandak Police subprecinct. -- JP

JAKARTA: Two men miraculously survived after being thrown from an electric commuter train in Kampung Buaran, Bekasi, on Saturday morning.

Abdul Kahar, 21, and Joko, 22, were on board the train when five unidentified thugs grabbed their bags. The two tried to resist but were thrown from the train instead.

Kahar and Joko survived because the train was not running at full speed. They sustained only minor injuries to their bodies and later reported the incident to West Bekasi police subprecinct.

Jafar, 24, a street vendor who witnessed the incident, said that Kahar and Joko attempted to fight the thugs.

"However, they then surrendered after seeing that the thugs were carrying sharp weapons," said Jafar, who also accompanied Kahar and Joko in reporting the incident to the police.

After being infuriated by the victims' resistance, the criminals then threw them off the train, he added.

The criminals stole Rp 150,000 (US$17) in total from both victims. -- JP

Jakarta eyes PON championship

JAKARTA: Chairman of the Jakarta Sports Council (KONI DKI Jaya), Fauzi Bowo, boasted that the city squad would reclaim the overall championship in the next 16th National Games (PON) in Palembang, South Sumatra.

Defending champion Jakarta came second to host East Java in the last games in 2000.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new board of the Jakarta Wall and Rock Climbing Association (FPTI DKI Jaya), Fauzi, also deputy governor of Jakarta, said that the city squad for PON would consists of 160 athletes, who had participated in the 22nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

"SEA Games medalists brought home 33 golds, 28 silvers and some bronzes. We're optimistic they will grab more medals in the next PON," he said.

"The city administration will provide cash bonuses of Rp 852 million (US$100,235) if they're successful in PON," he added. -- Antara
