Paul Wolfowitz's road to World Bank

* Paul Wolfowitz earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Cornell University in 1965 and a doctorate in political science from the University of Chicago in 1972. * He has spent more than 30 years as a public servant and educator under six presidents. * Under president Reagan, Wolfowitz served three years as U.S. ambassador to Indonesia. * In 1989, president George Bush (Sr.) appointed Wolfowitz as under secretary of defense for policy. He helped Defense Secretary Cheney to develop plans for prosecuting the Gulf War. * In March 2001, Wolfowitz rose one rank to deputy secretary of defense, the Pentagon's number two post, supporting Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld -- the last post before being appointed on Thursday as World Bank president. * Since the Sept. 11 attacks, he assisted in planning the global war on terrorism, including the military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. * Wolfowitz has served as dean and professor of international relations (1994-2001) at The Johns Hopkins University and taught political science at Yale University (1970-1973). * Wolfowitz has written widely on national security strategy and foreign policy.
