Mala Nurilmala, Secretary of the IPB University Halal Science Center, believes that the halal concept is no longer limited to product certification. Halal has evolved into a component of an industrial ecosystem that relates to trade, investment, and the creation of employment.

“Halal is not merely a religious issue, but rather how halal relates to the future direction of industry, trading, investment, and even job opportunities. It is all interconnected within the halal ecosystem,” Mala stated at the Industrial Festival x Halint Indo 2026 in Tangerang, Banten, on Sunday (27/09/2026).

Mala explained that the development of the halal concept has entered a much broader stage. While previously associated primarily with religious aspects and certification, halal now encompasses science, technology, traceability, innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness.

Mala noted that consumers are increasingly paying attention to the origin of ingredients used in products, including aspects of halal compliance and traceability.

In addition to the halal status of ingredients, she noted that industries must also consider the potential for halal contamination and the sustainability of the supply chain.

Consequently, the implementation of halal principles does not end with product certification but covers the entire process within the industrial ecosystem.

She added that the evolution of the halal concept demonstrates the growing interconnectedness between halal aspects and industrial activities, ranging from raw materials and production processes to the final products consumed by the public.
