Beyond Abortion: Doctor in Mataram Allegedly Involved in Baby Trafficking
The Mataram Child Protection Agency (LPA) plans to bring allegations of illegal abortion practices and baby trafficking, involving an obstetrician at a hospital in Mataram, to the West Nusa Tenggara Regional Police. This step is being taken to dismantle a suspected syndicate that has harmed numerous victims.
The Chairman of LPA Mataram, Joko Jumadi, revealed that the agency has detected a pattern of legal violations. In addition to illegal abortion processes, the obstetrician at a private hospital in Mataram is allegedly involved in the sale and purchase of babies resulting from extramarital relationships.
“If a woman is pregnant, this doctor provides two options. The first option is abortion (if the gestational age allows). If she cannot undergo an abortion, she is provided with someone for adoption,” said Joko when confirmed by detikBali on Sunday (30/08/2026).
Joko noted that the suspected baby trafficking case in the private hospital surfaced following reports from several residents in West Lombok. The illegal adoption process was uncovered after the adoptive parents encountered legal issues.
“Because there were concerns that the baby would be affected by the legal problems, a neighbour of the adoptive parents reported the matter to LPA Mataram. The report came from a neighbour of the adopters,” he said.
“Meanwhile, the biological mother of the baby is a university student from East Lombok,” he added.
Joko explained that during LPA Mataram’s investigation, the doctor was suspected of acting as an intermediary by presenting names of women intending to give birth to prospective adopters. However, when questioned, the doctor claimed to merely be facilitating connections between the parties.
“At that time, no one admitted to the full extent of it. The doctor (claims) to be an intermediary. This doctor is a specialist,” he explained.
Joko stated that the agency has already cancelled the illegal adoption process, and the baby has been returned to the biological parents. “We have cancelled it. We returned the baby to the biological parents,” he said.
Regarding the allegations of illegal abortion and baby trafficking, Joko emphasised that the agency is in further communication with law enforcement agencies (APH).
“We are communicating with law enforcement regarding the handling of this case. First and foremost, we cannot allow the existence of an abortion syndicate to continue, especially when this is being carried out by a hospital and an obstetrician,” concluded Joko.
It was previously reported that LPA Mataram is investigating reports of illegal abortion practices at a hospital in Mataram. These suspected illegal practices were uncovered after the victim’s family reported the matter to LPA Mataram last week.
According to the victim’s report, the fee for illegal abortions at the private hospital reaches Rp 15 million.
