Beware! These Rupiah Denominations Are No Longer Valid, Check the Exchange Deadline
Since independence, Indonesia has issued various types of currency used by the public. Although physical money remains valid as a means of payment, several rupiah denominations are now no longer in circulation as they have been withdrawn.
However, the public still has the opportunity to exchange the withdrawn currency within a period of up to 10 years from the date of withdrawal.
The provisions for the withdrawal of rupiah currency are set out in Bank Indonesia Regulation No. 21/10/PBI/2019, as quoted by CNBC Indonesia on Saturday (28/3/2026).
The following are the provisions:
If the physical condition of the metal rupiah coin is more than 1/2 (one half) of its original size and the authenticity of the rupiah can be recognised, replacement will be given at the nominal value of the exchanged rupiah.
If the physical condition of the metal rupiah coin is equal to or less than 1/2 (one half) of its original size, no replacement will be given.
