Beware rumors, say military

JAMBI, Jambi: The military called on local students of Islamic boarding schools to be careful of rumors spread to create hostility between people of different religions.

Local military chief Col. Istarto Subagio said Islamic students should be critical of the rumors that often circulate in the society.

"Rumors meant to undermine national unity abound and the public should not be easily agitated," he told about 340 students of Islamic boarding schools in a breaking of the fast Wednesday night.

He also called on the students to help overcome the problem of juvenile delinquency in Jambi, Antara reported.

Late last year, religious mob violence torched dozens of churches and shops belonging to people of Chinese descent in West and East Java. (pan)
